Google Ads for home service businessesPlumbers, HVAC, roofers, electricians and contractors
Your customers search when something breaks or a project can't wait, and most of them pick up the phone. I run Google Ads and Local Services Ads for home service businesses with every call tracked by source, ads limited to your service area and budget moved to the jobs that pay. Management starts at $900 a month, with no setup fee.
How Google Ads works for home service businesses
When a pipe bursts or the AC quits, people search for "plumber near me" or "AC repair" and call one of the first businesses they see. Google Ads puts you at the top of those searches, in your service area, at the hours you can answer. You pay when someone clicks, or per lead with Local Services Ads.
For a home service business, the calls are the business. That is why I track every call from the ads and from the website by source, keep ads to the towns you actually serve and push budget toward high-value jobs like replacements and installs.
Google Ads built around how your customers search
Every trade searches differently. Your campaigns should reflect how your customers search.
Google Ads for plumbers
Emergency searches like "emergency plumber" or "water heater repair" bring the most valuable calls. I run them with call assets, a tight service radius and a schedule that matches when you can pick up, and keep separate campaigns for drains, water heaters and repiping.
Google Ads for HVAC companies
Demand follows the weather: AC repair in summer, furnace and heating repair in winter. Budgets shift with the season, and repairs, replacements and maintenance plans run separately, because a new system is worth far more than a service call.
Google Ads for roofers
Roof leaks and storm damage are urgent; full replacements are big decisions. I split the two, use forms with a few qualifying questions for replacements and remarketing to stay in front of homeowners while they compare quotes.
Google Ads for electricians
A mix of urgent repairs and planned projects like panel upgrades, EV charger installs and generators. Each gets its own ads and landing pages, so a $5,000 project isn't treated like a $150 call-out.
Google Ads for contractors
Remodeling, decks, siding, windows and additions are high-ticket and slower to close. The goal is fewer, better leads: filtering out DIY and job-seeker searches, and qualifying forms that tell you the project and budget up front.
Other home services
Cleaning, landscaping, pest control, garage doors, movers and more. Same approach: track every call and form, target your area and spend where the booked jobs come from.
Why call tracking decides what your ads are worth
Most home service leads arrive by phone. If Google only counts clicks on the call button in the ad, it misses everyone who visits your website first and calls from there, often a large share of your calls. Bidding then optimizes on a fraction of your real results.
- Every call by source: a call tracking number that swaps in for ad visitors, so calls from Google Ads, Local Services Ads, your Business Profile and organic search are counted separately.
- Real leads only: short calls, existing customers and wrong numbers filtered out, so cost per lead means something.
- Missed calls: you see how many calls from paid ads went unanswered and when. Fixing that is often the cheapest way to get more jobs.
- Booked jobs: where your job management software allows it, booked and completed jobs are sent back to Google Ads, so bidding learns which searches bring revenue.
The tracking is built in the first weeks of management. You can also start with a one-time conversion and analytics tracking setup.
Local Services Ads vs. Google Search ads
Most home service businesses do best with both, managed together.
| Local Services Ads | Google Search ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Where they show | At the very top, with the Google Guaranteed or Google Screened badge | Top of search results, below Local Services Ads |
| You pay for | Each lead (a call, message or booking) | Each click to your website or call button |
| Control | Limited: service types, area, budget and hours | Full: keywords, ads, landing pages, bids and schedules |
| Best for | Trust and urgent calls in your core area | Specific high-value services and wider reach |
| What I handle | Profile, service types, reviews, lead disputes and budget | Everything from keywords to weekly optimization |
Where home service ad budgets usually leak
- DIY searches. "How to fix a leaking faucet" brings clicks, not customers. Without negative keywords you pay for them every day.
- Job seekers. Searches like "plumber jobs" or "HVAC technician salary" match broad keywords surprisingly often.
- A service area that's too big. Default location settings also show ads to people outside your area, and to people only interested in it.
- Ads running when nobody answers. Calls at night or on weekends that go to voicemail are lost leads you still paid for.
- Every lead treated the same. A drain cleaning and a full system replacement get the same budget, so the profitable jobs never get scaled.
- No call tracking. The account looks like it barely works, and the budget gets cut right when it should grow.

Ad spend is separate and paid directly to Google from your own card. I never mark up or handle your ad budget. For most local service businesses, $1,500–2,000 a month in ad spend is where results become reliably measurable.
Fixed the tracking. The store got busier.
A hardware store was paying for Google Ads without knowing whether the ads brought anyone through the door. I rebuilt conversion tracking from 1 action to 9, added call tracking and optimized the account and campaigns.

How much should a plumber or HVAC company spend on Google Ads?
It depends on your area, your services and how many jobs you can take on. For most local service businesses, $1,500–2,000 a month in ad spend is where results become reliably measurable, paid directly to Google. After the free initial audit I recommend a starting budget for your market and show how it should be split between services.
Are Local Services Ads worth it for home service businesses?
Usually, yes. Local Services Ads show above regular ads with the Google Guaranteed or Google Screened badge, and you pay per lead instead of per click. They give you less control than Search ads, so most businesses get the best results running both, with call tracking to compare what each one brings in.
Can my ads show only in the towns I serve?
Yes. I target your service area by town, ZIP code or radius, and set ads to show only to people located there. People who are merely interested in the area don't see them. Different services can have different areas, for example a wider radius for replacements than for repairs.
Can ads run only when we can answer the phone?
Yes. Ad schedules match your business hours, and call-only ads can be turned off when nobody answers. If you offer 24/7 emergency service, emergency campaigns can run around the clock while the rest pause overnight.
How quickly will we get calls from Google Ads?
Ads can start showing within a day or two of launch, once tracking is in place and the ads are approved. The first weeks are used to learn which searches, areas and hours bring real jobs. From there, budget is shifted toward what works, week by week.
Do you work with home service businesses outside Massachusetts?
Yes. I'm based in Attleboro, MA, and work with businesses in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and across the US. Everything is done remotely, and calls are scheduled at times that work for you.
