How much do ChatGPT ads cost?Pricing, bids and budgets, explained for business owners

ChatGPT ads are sold in an auction, so there is no price list. What you pay depends on your bid, your category and how well your ads match the conversation. This page explains how ChatGPT ads pricing works, what advertisers have reported paying so far, how billing works and what the total cost looks like when the campaigns are run properly.

The short answer

What ChatGPT ads cost in 2026

ChatGPT ads cost whatever it takes to win the auction for the conversations you want to appear in. You choose to pay per 1,000 impressions (CPM) or per click (CPC), and you set a budget and, if you want, a maximum bid. For click campaigns, OpenAI suggests starting with a maximum bid of $3–5 per click. Since self-serve Ads Manager opened on May 5, 2026, the only minimum is a daily budget of $25 per campaign.

Early reports from advertisers put average costs at roughly $3–9 per click, with higher prices in competitive categories such as software and finance. Those numbers are early and vary a lot. The figure that matters for your business is the cost per lead or sale, and that depends on tracking, targeting, ads and landing pages more than on the bid.

How ChatGPT ads pricing works

  • Cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM): you pay each time your ad is shown 1,000 times. This was the only option in OpenAI's early pilot and is still available for campaigns built around reach.
  • Cost per click (CPC): you pay only when someone clicks your ad. This is how most businesses that want leads or sales buy ChatGPT ads.
  • Conversion-optimized campaigns: ChatGPT aims for an action you choose, such as a purchase or a sign-up, and you still pay per valid click. They need conversion events from your website through OpenAI's pixel or Conversions API.
  • The auction: OpenAI uses a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. Your ad competes on relevance as well as bid, so a better match with the conversation can win at a lower price.
  • Your bid: with Maximize results, OpenAI sets bids within your daily budget. With a manual maximum bid, you cap the price, but a bid set too low limits how often your ad shows.

What advertisers have paid for ChatGPT ads so far

OpenAI doesn't publish average prices. These are the figures reported by the trade press and by advertisers since ads launched, from the early pilot to self-serve.

WhenHow ads were soldReported price
Early 2026US pilot with selected brands, bought through OpenAI's sales teamAbout $60 CPM, with a reported $200,000 minimum commitment
April 2026Wider pilot, through OpenAI and ad-tech partnersAbout $25–45 CPM or $3–5 per click, with a reported $50,000 minimum
May 2026Self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager opens to businesses of all sizesCPM or CPC bidding, $25 minimum daily spend per campaign
Since thenSelf-serve and partner buying, expanding to more countriesAverage CPCs of roughly $3–9 reported by advertisers, higher in competitive categories

Pilot figures were reported by Adweek, Digiday and The Information. Self-serve CPCs come from agencies and advertisers sharing their own results. They aren't an OpenAI rate card, and your price depends on your category, location and ads.

How budgets and billing work

  • Daily budget is an average. OpenAI can spend up to twice your daily budget on a single day and up to seven times it over a week, so a $100 daily budget can mean up to $200 in one day and $700 in a week.
  • The minimum is $25 a day per campaign. That's the current minimum daily spend for US campaigns. Other currencies have their own minimums, and there is no minimum spend for the account as a whole.
  • You pay after the ads run. ChatGPT Ads uses postpay billing: your card is charged each time your unpaid spend reaches a payment threshold, and any balance at the end of the month.
  • A card check isn't a charge. Adding a card can show a temporary authorization hold that your bank releases after verification.
  • Taxes are added on top where they apply, so a charge can be a little higher than the threshold.

Ad spend always goes straight from your card to OpenAI. When I run your campaigns, the account and the billing stay in your name, and I never mark up or handle your ad budget.

What makes ChatGPT ads cost more or less

  • Your category. More advertisers competing for the same conversations means higher prices. Software, finance and other high-value categories are reported to cost more per click.
  • How well your ad fits the conversation. Relevance is part of the auction. An ad and landing page that answer the question the person just asked can win at a lower price than a generic ad.
  • The context you describe. ChatGPT matches ads to the conversation itself. Context that's too broad buys clicks from the wrong people; context that's too narrow barely shows.
  • Your bidding. CPM, CPC or conversion-optimized bidding, and whether you cap the bid, change both the price and who you reach.
  • Your tracking. Conversion-optimized campaigns need conversions coming in from your site. Without them, you pay for clicks without knowing which ones turned into customers.

The total cost of advertising on ChatGPT

There are two parts: the ad spend you pay OpenAI, and the work of setting up and running the campaigns so that spend turns into customers.

Why cost per click is the wrong number to judge ChatGPT ads by

A $3 click that never becomes a customer costs more than a $9 click that books a job. What tells you whether ChatGPT ads are worth it is the cost per lead and per sale, measured the same way as on Google and Microsoft.

That takes OpenAI's pixel and Conversions API set up and tested before any budget runs, UTM tags so Google Analytics 4 shows ChatGPT as its own source, and one report that puts ChatGPT next to your other channels. It's also the part most advertisers skip, which is why so many judge ChatGPT ads on clicks alone.

That's the work I do for you: tracking first, then campaigns built for how your customers actually ask, then weekly optimization based on leads and sales. If you'd like to know what ChatGPT ads would cost for your business, the free initial audit is the place to start.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost per click?

There's no fixed price. ChatGPT ads are sold in an auction, and OpenAI suggests starting with a maximum bid of $3–5 per click. Advertisers have reported average costs of roughly $3–9 per click so far, with higher prices in competitive categories.

Is there a minimum budget for ChatGPT ads?

Yes, but it's small: the current minimum daily spend is $25 per campaign, which is about $750 a month for one campaign running every day. There's no minimum for the account as a whole. The large minimum commitments reported in early 2026 applied to the pilot before self-serve opened.

Are ChatGPT ads more expensive than Google Ads?

It depends on the category. Click prices reported so far are within the range many businesses pay on Google search, but both vary a lot by industry and location. The fair comparison is cost per lead or sale, measured with the same tracking on both, which is how I report them.

How are ChatGPT ads billed?

After the ads run. Your card is charged when your unpaid spend reaches a payment threshold, and any remaining balance is charged at the end of the month. Your daily budget is an average, so a single day can spend up to twice that amount.

Do I pay OpenAI or you for the ads?

You pay OpenAI for ad spend, directly from your own card. You pay me only for management: an add-on from $350 a month to Google Ads or Microsoft Ads management, or a fixed quote for ChatGPT Ads on their own.

How much should a small business spend on ChatGPT ads?

Enough to get a steady flow of clicks and leads to learn from, which depends on your prices, area and category. I recommend a specific starting budget after the free initial audit, based on your market and what a customer is worth to you.
