How to advertise on ChatGPTA plain-English guide for business owners

ChatGPT now shows ads below relevant answers, and people ask it every day what to buy and who to hire. This guide explains how ChatGPT ads work, what they cost, how a campaign is set up and where most businesses go wrong, so you can decide whether it's right for you.

The short answer

How do you advertise on ChatGPT?

To advertise on ChatGPT, a business creates an account in OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads Manager, installs OpenAI's pixel and Conversions API to track leads and sales, creates a campaign with a budget and bid, describes the conversations it wants to appear in and adds ads with a headline, description, image and link. Ads then show below relevant ChatGPT answers, clearly labeled as sponsored.

Getting an ad live is the easy part. Getting ChatGPT to bring in customers at a cost that makes sense depends on tracking, the context you describe, the ads and the landing page, and on reading the results correctly. That is the work most businesses hand to a specialist.

How ChatGPT ads work

  • Where they appear: below a relevant ChatGPT answer, kept separate from the answer and marked as sponsored, with your business name, icon, headline, description, image and link.
  • Who sees them: adults using ChatGPT on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI doesn't show ads on Plus, Pro or business plans, or to users under 18.
  • How they're matched: by the topic and intent of the conversation instead of exact keywords. You describe the conversations you want to show up in, and OpenAI matches ads using that, your landing page and your ad copy.
  • What they cost: an auction, like Google Ads, priced per 1,000 impressions or per click. For click campaigns, OpenAI suggests starting with a maximum bid of $3–5 per click.
  • Privacy: advertisers never see conversations. Reporting is aggregated: impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, cost per click and conversions.
  • Limits: ads are kept away from sensitive topics such as health, finance and politics, and from brand-unsafe conversations.

Based on OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads help center and ads.openai.com, checked October 31, 2026. The platform is in beta and changes often; I keep this guide current.

Setting up ChatGPT ads: the six steps

Each step looks simple in Ads Manager. The difference between ads that bring customers and ads that only spend is in the details.

  1. Check that ChatGPT fits your business. Your category has to be allowed, and your customers have to ask ChatGPT about what you sell. Home services, local professionals and products people research before buying usually fit well; restricted topics don't.
  2. Create the ad account in your name. Set up ChatGPT Ads Manager with your business details and billing, so you own the account and its data from day one.
  3. Set up conversion tracking before spending anything. Install OpenAI's pixel, connect the Conversions API for server-side events, define which actions count as leads and sales, and test them with real submissions. Add UTM tags so Google Analytics 4 shows ChatGPT as its own source. Skipping this step is the most common and most expensive mistake.
  4. Plan the campaign. Choose the goal, budget and bidding (per click or per 1,000 impressions), the locations, and describe the conversations you want to appear in: the questions your customers actually ask.
  5. Write ads for conversations, not searches. People ask ChatGPT full questions and expect a useful answer. Ads copied from Google Ads tend to underperform. The landing page has to answer the same question the person just asked.
  6. Launch, measure and optimize every week. Review leads and cost per lead, refine the conversation context, test new ads and images, and compare ChatGPT with your other channels on the same numbers.

Where ChatGPT ad budgets go wrong

The platform is new, so most advertisers are still learning by trial and error, on their own budget.

No conversion tracking

Without the pixel and Conversions API working, you only see clicks. You can't tell whether ChatGPT brings customers, and bidding can't learn.

Thinking in keywords

ChatGPT matches ads to conversations. Context written like a keyword list reaches the wrong questions or too few of them.

Copying Google ads

Headlines written for a search results page don't fit an answer to a full question. The ad and the landing page need their own angle.

The wrong landing page

Sending people to a homepage instead of a page that answers their question loses most of the clicks you paid for.

Set and forget

A beta platform changes often. Campaigns that aren't reviewed weekly drift, and new features go unused.

Judging it in isolation

ChatGPT often reaches people earlier, before they search on Google. Without reporting across channels, its real value is easy to miss.

Running ChatGPT ads yourself vs. with a specialist

You can learn it yourself. Most owners decide their time is better spent running the business.

How much it costs to advertise on ChatGPT

There are two parts: the ad spend you pay OpenAI, and the cost of setting up and managing the campaigns.

  • Ad spend: set in an auction, per 1,000 impressions or per click, paid directly to OpenAI from your own card. OpenAI suggests a starting maximum bid of $3–5 per click for click campaigns. The right budget depends on your market, and I recommend one in the free initial audit.
  • Management with me: an add-on from $350 a month to Google Ads or Microsoft Ads management, including account setup, tracking, ads and weekly optimization. ChatGPT Ads on their own get a fixed quote after the free initial audit.

I never mark up or handle your ad budget, and the account stays in your name.

Advertising on ChatGPT: questions

Something else? Send me a message and I'll reply within one business day.

Can any business advertise on ChatGPT?

Most businesses can, through ChatGPT Ads Manager. OpenAI keeps ads away from sensitive topics such as health, finance and politics, and every ad has to follow its ad policies. The free initial audit includes a check of whether your category and offer fit.

Is ChatGPT Ads the same as OpenAI Ads?

Yes. ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI's advertising platform, so you'll see it called ChatGPT Ads, OpenAI Ads or ChatGPT advertising. Campaigns are created in ChatGPT Ads Manager at ads.openai.com.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

Ad costs are set in an auction, per 1,000 impressions or per click, and there's no fixed price list. For click campaigns, OpenAI suggests starting with a maximum bid of $3–5 per click. Management with me is an add-on from $350 a month to Google Ads or Microsoft Ads management, or a fixed quote on its own.

Do ChatGPT ads work for local businesses?

They can. People ask ChatGPT to recommend plumbers, compare roofing quotes or find a dentist, and ads can be targeted by region. Whether it pays off depends on your service and area, which is why tracking leads from day one matters.

Should I advertise on ChatGPT instead of Google?

Usually not instead, but alongside. Google catches people who already know what to search for; ChatGPT reaches them earlier, while they're still asking for advice. Most businesses get the clearest picture by running both with the same tracking.

Can you set up and manage ChatGPT ads for me?

Yes. I set up ChatGPT Ads from scratch in your name: account, pixel and Conversions API, campaign strategy, ads and images, then weekly optimization and clear reports. It starts with a free initial audit of your website and tracking, with no obligation.
